Rep. Petersen Receives PIAW Legislative Excellence Award

Madison, WI – The Professional Insurance Agents of Wisconsin (PIAW) – a trade association representing thousands of independent agents from across the state – recently announced the creation of a new award to recognize the accomplishments of Wisconsin legislators working to improve the insurance industry and the prosperity of small businesses in the state.

The Professional Insurance Agents of Wisconsin’s Legislative Excellence Award will be given annually to a member of each legislative house who demonstrates support for PIAW priority issues, including showing dedication to preserving the integrity of the state’s insurance industry and efforts to keep Wisconsin a flourishing place for independent agents to do business. The PIAW Legislative Committee is responsible for selecting the award recipients and evaluates legislators’ contributions during the session as well as during their legislative career in making their decision.

PIAW is pleased to announce that Representative Kevin Petersen, Vice-Chair of the Assembly Committee on Insurance, is the Assembly recipient of the 2022 PIAW Legislative Excellence Award.  He is the first member of the Wisconsin State Assembly to receive the award.

Julie Ulset, Past President of PIAW, presented the award to Representative Petersen at the State Capitol today along with other PIAW Legislative Committee members.

“This session, Representative Petersen helped enact important legislation for insurance cybersecurity,” said Ulset. “He worked continuously over multiple sessions to create a final bill that will protect consumer data and help to keep the insurance industry strong. We look forward to working with him in his future roles.”

Representative Petersen was recently elected Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore and was the author of 2021 Wisconsin Act 73. This Act was based on model legislation from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and put in place standards for data cybersecurity in Wisconsin. This was a priority issue for PIAW during the 2021-2022 Legislative Session.
